Beautiful vintage Wedding Veils

If you are getting married soon and desire a vintage theme wedding, wearing vintage wedding veils, apart from giving you that 'something old', is a lovely choice that brings historical meaning and classic beauty to the bridal on your special day.

Wearing veils for weddings spans many centuries, and it's use is primarily based on religious connotations. In other parts of the world, using a veil as a face cover sometimes means different things, but in the westernised world, wedding veils are bridal wear.

There is a huge vintage scene in the western world today and vintage bridal veils are beautiful bridal headpieces that gives a degree of mystery and implication of the past era's beauty of a blushing bride. Now, designing producing wedding veils inspired by the vintage has now become a specialist area.

Many bride's-to-be are sometimes ready to 'venture across the oceans' online, seeking for vintage wedding veils and bridal headpieces, ready to pay for the extra postage they may incur, just to get a bridal veil fashioned by, or after the wedding couture styles of the early to mid twentieth century.

Vintage wedding veils are truly stunning pieces of art.

Classic Vintage Wedding Veils

Because wedding day attires and themes leans towards the classic nowadays, bridal veils are better simple but elegant, with just a little dash of drama, which is all about the length of your veil, its embellishments and its exclusivity.

Good examples of long and dramatic wedding veils are those of the seventies hippy vibes, with lovely cotton-lace skullcaps and sweeping floor-length trails.

Most antique and vintage wedding veils are white, pearl or off-white, however, coloured varieties of bridal veils are a good option for brides who wish to wear wedding dresses with colour. Nonetheless, there are professionals who can successfully dye a modern white favourite to desired luxurious vintage shades.

Cathedral wedding veils - The vintage Cathedral veil drapes naturally to the ground and the popular fabric to use today is the premium quality tulle (not the ones used for discount veils!). It is also referred to as the 'shimmer veil' and it's available in single or double layers.

Cathedral bridal veils have a subtle but breathtaking effect in the dim light of many traditional churches and chapels, and comes to life as the bride walks out into the sunlight, and under the flash of a camera light.

This veil style that is obviously a vintage veil can be worn at the top of the head or behind the head. A tiara can be added for an elegant and stylish effect.

Elbow length brides veil - This style of wedding veil connects from a headpiece and extends down to the elbows. Its more commonly worn for casual weddings as elbow wedding veils gives the graceful look without an overpowering effect on the bride or the wedding gown.

Cloche or Cap wedding headpieces - These were the rave of the 1920's and they fitted over the entire scalp, falling down gracefully over the shoulders.

The cap veils were usually made from net-backed fabrics, using the finest lace and silk tulle fabrics. Trimmings and decorations included satin, velvet ribbons, with flower blossoms at the ears.

Gothic wedding veils - Also referred to as 'vampire' veils, are exotic medieval bridal veils made from plain or patterned tulle fabric. These are quite popular and seen mostly around Halloween.

Birdcage bridal veils - These styles of wedding veils simply hint at what lies beneath the face. Having a veil custom-made using vintage materials is a great way of getting exactly what you want in the event that you don’t find what you really want. Birdcage veils are quite simple to make by oneself.

Make Your Own Wedding Veils

Finding an authentic vintage wedding veil is cumbersome and an uphill task. In a lot of cases, they tend to be expensive.

If you are a bride on a budget, but you don’t want those store bought off the rack veils, why not purchase your material from Bridal Fabrics stores and make your own customised vintage wedding veil.

Making a simple wedding veil is very easy and requires only a few steps. But we know that the stress of putting together a wedding may not give you the privileged of time to make a bridal veil.

So, if you feel that making your own wedding veil seems too daunting and overwhelming for you at this stressful time, why not assign the duty of making the veil to your mother, sister or maid of honour.

All they need for the work are a pair of scissors, a comb (or a tiara with a comb inset), faux pearls or diamante, fabric glue, needle and thread, and most important of all, tulle. Tulle can be found in major fabric stores in a variety of types and colour.

Choose the soft lace fabrics and not the stiff and scratchy types.

Decide what length of veil you want.

  • For a shoulder-length veil, you will need 24 inches of fabric.
  • Waist length will require about 32 inches.
  • For fingertip length, you will need 40 inches.
  • Floor length will vary by your height.
  • You can also have a longer, cathedral-length veil that goes onto the ground.

Blend The Past With The Present

Brides can incorporate elements of the past with those of the present to create a personal and unique chic style. Blending the classic vintage style with fashion of the twenty first century is also a fantastic way to look beautiful and chic without losing personal style, or looking like a 'high street buy-and-wear' dressed' bride.

To tune into vintage styles, you don't necessarily need to recreate a period costume or even stick to a particular decade. Mix the bygone creations of wedding veils with the new designs of couture bridal gowns, and see a transformation in stylish couture.

Today wedding veils don’t have to be long lace pieces. They must however fulfil the age-old purpose of hiding the delicate innocent face from the strong manly groom.

Hello Oleshaner1, Thanks for your comment.

That sounds like a great piece of art you have there, and im sure its worth a lot. I know you can sell it on eBay. Are you registered as a seller on eBay? If not, register, get a good shot of the veil, and put it up for an auction.

There are people out there who would do anything to get a cathedral wedding veil. I know for sure.

Goodluck.

Excellent! Great tips and great video! I would have never thought that the veil hitting at the hip would add pounds! Wow! Practical too! The convertible head band is a neat idea. I have the decorative pins and the veil - will try a test run soon.
