For thousands of years, the oriental rug has been one of the most valuable possessions of the people and the Nomadic tribes of the Middle and Far East. These fine rugs have been hand woven by travellers of Iran, Afghanistan India and China. Some of the best oriental rugs are still hand woven today by their descendants.

In China, the art of oriental rug weaving dates far back to 4000 BC, and back then, as it is now, the quality of the yarn or wool was, and is the fundamentals to the production of an oriental rug.

It has been said that the breed of sheep, their diet and even their habitat was a determining factor to the quality of wool required for weaving an oriental rug.

Authentic oriental rug weavers have been known to use one and a half miles length of pure cotton to set up looms. All to produce a 5ft by 3ft oriental rug. And once the weaving process is completed, the warp ends are tied to make the rug fringes. The Chinese oriental rug for example is then sculptured and hand crafted - the designs are brought to life by this meticulous skill.

The Origin Of Colours Of An Oriental Rug

Colours of the traditional oriental rug was produced using vegetable dyed yarns . The natural based dyes possessed a more subtle and mellow tone, with a vivid richness of colour which improves as the oriental rug ages. Qualities that are missing with the use of modern chemical dyes of today.

The common colour combinations of an oriental rug is the use of the strong element of a deep red colour woven on a fairly neutral background.

Oriental Rugs - Themes & Patterns

Themes and patterns are based on classic symbols based on natural elements, mythology, and up till today, Chinese oriental rugs are based on the Buddhist and Taoist religions.

The quality of an oriental rug is usually judged by the quantity of knots in a square inch. Quite pricey, oriental rugs may need a specialist assessment before one decides to purchase one. A specialist is in a better position to give an independent advice before paying out large sums of money.

As I fill my home with natural fibers, rugs like this are becoming more appealing as I know they are made from wool fibers. Wool has healthy benefits because they are less likely to cause allergies - and also important - they are not flammable like so many of the synthetic rugs on the market.

Thanks for the information!

BkCreative, hi. Thanks for your visit and comments.

Wool is healthier than the synthetic fibres found in abundance today. Plus it's eco friendly too.
