Patio Landscape Designs - How To Make Patios Part Of The Garden
73
Patios make the perfect stage to showcase favourite plants, and there are numerous ways to add interest to outdoor rooms when they are landscaped with plants and trees.
There are a number of patio landscape design ideas that will enhance a patio and blend it with the surrounding garden.
- Framing the patio with raised beds of bright and colourful annual plants or favoured roses.
- Creating planting pockets in the patio and growing low maintenance plants to create a patio focal point.
- Accenting the patio with shade producing trees.
- Splashing a colourful array of flowers against a dull boring background.
For patios that are quite small and haven't got much space for potted plants, beautiful plants can be hung overhead in lovely hanging planters, or they can be planted against garden walls. Where some shade is needed in patios without canopies, a tree planted in a tub or half barrel will suffice. It will give shade from the sun while enjoying a quiet afternoon, reading on the patio.
For people who enjoy gardening tasks, and love to potter around the outdoors, the patio can be given a new look all year round by simply rotating plant containers to display the best of each season's plant. It is however good to ensure that all plant containers fit in with the patio landscape design's theme.
Plants, asides being used as screens against the wind and excessive sun exposure, can be used to landscape patios by creatively having them placed in strategic spots on the patio. And they can be effectively placed or planted, to cover up untidy structural elements, brighten up dead ends or drab corners.

If the patio is large with a flat expanse of paving, it can be given character by having cut-out pockets of squares, triangles or circles, arranged in irregular patterns, and plants such as the African iris, gazanias or snapdragons planted in each pocket, to soften the bold flooring and add texture and colour to the patio's landscape design idea.
When landscaping your patio, its good to be selective about the plants you choose. Plants that grow uncontrollably will quickly give a cluttered untidy look. Over-planting will also appear unplanned and may end up resembling a forest of plants. If that's the idea sought, that's fine, but for a manicured and well designed patio landscape, it wont look very pleasing.
Plants colours, foliage and heights must be in harmony with each other and with the overall garden and landscape scheme. And finally, plants chosen must be adaptable to the local climate so that the patio landscape will look healthy and lush all year through.
